About Pleasant Valley Baptist Church The Pleasant Valley Baptist Church celebrated her 50th anniversary in June, 2004. She has grown from a small congregation of 50 to a thriving church averaging over 600. In 2003 alone, 77,107 people attended the church's weekly services, The church attracts people from all walks of life from senior saints, to middle-aged adults, to young married couples, to college students, to teenagers and children. The church was started in 1954 by Bro. Robert Johnson in a house that would become the parsonage on the Panama Avenue property. On the first Sunday, 52 people attended Sunday School, 50 attended the morning service, and 37 attended the evening service. One month later, there were 92 people in attendance and soon the church began its first building program, constructing the two-story portion of the Panama Avenue building. In June, 1955, Bro. Ed Rodda became the pastor of the young church. Under his leadership the church added an auditorium to their two story building. Bro. Gene Barnes took over the pastorate of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in September, 1959, and led the church to add an educational wing to their existing building. During the 1960's and early 1970's Pleasant Valley Baptist Church was pastored by three other Godly men...Bro. C. Allen Taff from May, 1962 to June, 1965, Bro. Calvin Odell from 1965 to 1969, and Bro. E. Wesley Smith from 1969 to 1973. In October of 1973, Bro. Barry Foster became the seventh pastor of the church. Bro. Foster served as the pastor of this church for 14 years. Under his leadership, the church began bus routes throughout the entire city of Chico. In 1980, the church began its Christian School, which is still the only school in the county to host Kindergarten through grade 12. Beginning with 43 students in 1980, the school began its 25th year in September, 2004. Our present pastor, Tim Ruhl, came to the church in January, 1988. In the past seventeen years, Pleasant Valley Baptist Church has seen the best years of its 50-year history. The church continues to grow with many different ministries such as a nursing home ministry, a tape ministry, and a television ministry. One of the most exciting of its ministries is Mount Zion Baptist Camp which hosted its 17th annual camp this past summer with over 850 in attendance. The camp ministers to teens, juniors, and adults from all over the West Coast each summer. The Pleasant Valley Baptist Church has literally seen thousands of people walk the aisles of the church for salvation during its 50-year history. In the past seventeen years, 11,808 people have made public professions of accepting Christ as Savior, and 3589 of those have been baptized. The Pleasant Valley Baptist Church moved into its present facility in February, 1999. After 44 years at its Panama Avenue location, the church has relocated to a beautiful new church building on 25 acres at the corner of Highway 99 and Garner Lane in north Chico. The Pleasant Valley Baptist Church was founded as and still is an old-fashioned, family-oriented, Bible-preaching church that cares about helping and reaching people. Its greatest desire is that all would come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior and to have a personal walk with Him. The church is thankful to been blessed by God for the past 50 years. |
